About the book

A woman who has never liked her next-door neighbor, Tanya, discovers that Tanya is cheating on her husband, Joe. Despite her own husband’s warnings to stay out of it, she gets involved, setting off consequences that put several marriages at risk.

Our review

Curiosity about the house next door becomes something much messier in this quick suburban thriller.

My Neighbour’s Affair runs on a relatable temptation: you know a secret about someone you dislike, and you want to do something with it. Hurst’s narrator convinces herself she is acting out of decency, and much of the tension comes from watching her rationalize each step. The suburban setting, with its fences, driveways and polite hostility, is well observed, and the narrator’s marriage provides a counterweight that keeps the stakes personal.

As with many of Hurst’s books, the chapters are short and the twists come thick and fast, which makes it easy to read in a sitting. The trade-off is that characters behave in ways that serve the plot more than logic, and the final turns feel more surprising than convincing. It is enjoyable escapism, ideal for a flight or a lazy afternoon, but rarely more than that.

What we loved

  • A relatable, slippery moral premise
  • Brisk pacing with frequent reveals
  • A sharp eye for suburban tension

Keep in mind

  • Characters make implausible choices to advance the plot
  • Twists prioritize shock over coherence

The verdict

A fast, nosy-neighbor thriller that entertains in the moment and fades soon after.
