Our Review
About the book
A Christian devotional with a short reading for each day of the year, written in the first person as messages of comfort and encouragement from Jesus to the reader. Each entry is paired with related Bible references.
Our review
Gentle, comforting daily readings that have helped millions, along with an approach that divides many Christian readers.
Jesus Calling succeeds at what it sets out to do. Each entry takes a minute or two to read, uses calm, consoling language, and ends with scripture references to explore. For readers dealing with worry, illness or grief, the steady reassurance of peace, presence and trust can be a real help, and the daily format makes it easy to build a quiet morning habit. It is easy to see why the book became a fixture on so many nightstands.
The first-person voice is the sticking point. Writing as though Jesus himself is speaking has drawn criticism from many theologians and pastors, who worry it blurs the line between personal reflection and scripture. Over a full year the entries can also feel interchangeable, with the same themes of rest and trust coming back again and again. Readers who want theological substance may find it too soft.
What we loved
- Short daily readings that encourage routine
- Comforting tone for anxious seasons
- Scripture references with every entry
Keep in mind
- The first-person voice of Jesus is theologically contested
- Entries become repetitive over a year
Read it if you like
Readers who like Streams in the Desert or Our Daily Bread, or anyone wanting a gentle devotional habit.
The verdict
A soothing daily companion for many believers. Read it alongside scripture, not in place of it.
