Our Review
About the book
The final book in the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy finds the Young family’s matriarch, Su Yi, gravely ill, and her sprawling clan descending on Singapore to jockey for her favor and her legendary estate. Nick Young, now married to Rachel, must navigate the scheming while confronting his family’s past.
Our review
Kwan closes his trilogy with the same glittering excess, but this time the jewels come with a surprising amount of heart.
The comedy is still sharp. Kwan’s footnotes skewer luxury culture with deadpan precision, and his ensemble of grasping cousins, competitive aunties and tabloid-ready heirs is as entertaining as ever. What’s new is the tenderness. Su Yi’s history, revealed in flashbacks, gives the novel an emotional spine and lets the series reckon with what all that inheritance actually means to the people fighting over it. It’s the most rounded of the three books.
The sheer size of the cast remains a hurdle; there are moments when even devoted readers will need a family tree. Rachel, ostensibly a lead, gets surprisingly little to do, and a few subplots, particularly Kitty Pong’s antics, feel like sketches that wandered in from another novel. Still, as a send-off, it lands. Kwan gives his characters endings that feel earned, and the satire finally finds something to say beyond brand names.
What we loved
- Su Yi’s moving backstory, which deepens the whole trilogy
- Witty, cutting footnotes on wealth and status
- A satisfying conclusion for Nick and his family
Keep in mind
- The enormous cast can be hard to track
- Rachel is sidelined for much of the book
Read it if you like
Fans of Crazy Rich Asians and China Rich Girlfriend, Succession viewers, or readers of Jane Austen-style social comedy.
The verdict
A lavish, funny and unexpectedly moving finale; read the first two books before you settle into this one.
