Our Review
About the book
Clinical psychologist Julie Smith, known for her short social media videos, collects practical tools for managing low mood, anxiety, stress, criticism and motivation. The book is organized into brief chapters meant to be dipped into when a particular problem comes up.
Our review
Therapy basics in a tidy toolbox, from a clinician who knows how to explain things in plain language.
Smith’s book is practical in the best sense. Each chapter tackles a single problem, such as a low day, a racing mind or fear of judgment, and offers a handful of techniques drawn from cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance-based approaches and plain good sense. She explains why a tool works before asking you to try it, and her tone is calm and never patronizing. It’s the kind of book you can keep on a shelf and reach for in a bad week.
The format that makes it useful also keeps it shallow. Chapters are short and the techniques are mostly standard, so readers who have had therapy or read widely in self-help will recognize nearly everything. Serious or long-term struggles get a nod toward professional help but little else. Think of it as a well-edited first aid kit for the mind, not a substitute for treatment.
What we loved
- Short, problem-focused chapters
- Evidence-based techniques explained clearly
- A warm, steady tone
Keep in mind
- Mostly familiar material for experienced readers
- Too brief for complex mental health problems
Read it if you like
Readers who liked The Happiness Trap, Feeling Good, or Smith’s own videos.
The verdict
A sensible, approachable guide to everyday mental health. Best for beginners and as a quick refresher.
