About the book

The third book in Daniel Hurst’s Perfect Nurse series returns to a nurse narrator who has already concealed an affair with a married doctor and his death. Now raising her young son, she fears that police attention means her secrets are about to unravel.

Our review

Hurst’s murderous nurse is back, and the strain of keeping her secrets is beginning to show, on her and on the series.

The appeal of this series is its narrator: a nurse who confides her crimes directly to the reader with a mix of guilt, justification and maternal fear. The Nurse’s Mistake leans into that voice, and the opening, with its sense of a net tightening, is effective. Hurst writes in short, punchy chapters that keep you moving, and the focus on her young son gives the stakes an emotional edge.

The problem is that the formula is wearing thin by the third installment. Coincidences pile up, supporting characters exist mainly to threaten exposure, and the twists feel engineered rather than inevitable. Readers who loved the first two books will likely enjoy seeing where the story goes, but newcomers should start at the beginning and may find this entry the weakest.

What we loved

  • An intimate, confessional narrator
  • Short chapters that keep momentum high
  • A mother’s fear that adds emotional stakes

Keep in mind

  • Plot relies heavily on coincidence
  • Not a good entry point; read the earlier books first

Read it if you like

Readers who enjoyed The Perfect Nurse, or who like Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid and other quick domestic thrillers.

The verdict

A fast, readable continuation for committed fans, though the series’ tricks are starting to show their seams.
