Our Review
About the book
The second book in the Dungeon Crawler Carl series picks up as Carl and Princess Donut, his ex-girlfriend’s show cat, descend further into an intergalactic reality-show dungeon. New floors bring new monsters, new allies and new rules as the pair become unexpected celebrities to the alien audience.
Our review
The joke from book one keeps getting funnier, and the dungeon keeps getting meaner.
Carl’s Doomsday Scenario builds confidently on the first book’s premise. Dinniman expands the dungeon’s logic, adds memorable side characters, and leans into the reality-show framing that gives the series its satirical bite. Carl’s dry, exhausted, increasingly furious narration and Donut’s preening diva energy remain a superb double act, and the action sequences are cleverly built around the game’s strange rules.
As a middle-of-the-launch entry, it occasionally feels like it is setting up bigger things rather than delivering them, and the episodic floor structure can feel repetitive. Readers who disliked the crude humor and gross-out gags of book one will find no relief here. But for anyone already hooked, it is a satisfying continuation that hints at the deeper, angrier story still to come in later volumes.
What we loved
- Carl and Donut’s double act keeps sparkling
- Clever rules-based action
- Sharper reality-TV satire
Keep in mind
- Sometimes feels like setup for later books
- Episodic structure can repeat itself
