Our Review
About the book
An ancient Chinese treatise on military strategy, traditionally attributed to the general Sun Tzu, organized into thirteen short chapters on planning, terrain, deception, maneuver and the use of spies. It has been widely applied to business, sports and politics.
Our review
Two and a half thousand years on, this compact strategy manual still rewards slow, skeptical reading.
The Art of War is shorter than its reputation, and that is part of its strength. Its thirteen chapters are built from terse principles about knowing yourself and your opponent, avoiding battles you cannot win, and winning with as little fighting as possible. Because so much is compressed, a good translation with commentary makes a big difference. Read slowly, the book becomes a lesson in thinking ahead, weighing conditions and keeping your options open.
Much of the text deals with practical matters of ancient warfare, such as supply lines, terrain types, gongs and banners, that modern readers will skim. Its aphoristic style also makes it easy to quote out of context, which explains the many shallow business adaptations. Edition matters: some popular versions offer little more than a loose paraphrase. Pick a respected translation, such as those by Samuel Griffith or Lionel Giles.
What we loved
- Concise principles that apply far beyond war
- Emphasis on winning without direct conflict
- Short enough to reread often
Keep in mind
- Much logistical detail is now dated
- Quality varies widely between translations
Read it if you like
Readers who liked The Prince, The Book of Five Rings or Meditations.
The verdict
A foundational text that is short, dense and still useful. Choose a good translation and take your time with it.
