Our review

A brisk, story-driven case for treating every setback as raw material, built on two thousand years of Stoic thinking.

Holiday took a single idea from Marcus Aurelius and built a lively, accessible book around it. The three-part structure, how you see a problem, what you do about it and how you endure what cannot be changed, is easy to remember and easy to apply. The short chapters are packed with stories, from historical leaders to athletes and inventors, and they keep the pace quick. It is the kind of book people press on friends going through a hard season.

The anecdotes, however, sometimes do more work than the analysis, and a few are simplified to serve the point. Readers already familiar with Stoicism will find little that is new, and the success-focused framing can make the philosophy feel like a career hack. As a first step toward Stoic thinking, though, it is clear, encouraging and genuinely helpful, and a book many readers return to when life gets hard.

What we loved

  • Memorable, practical three-part framework
  • Short chapters full of engaging stories
  • An inviting introduction to Stoicism

Keep in mind

  • Anecdotes are sometimes oversimplified
  • Light on depth for readers who know the Stoics

Read it if you like

readers of Meditations, fans of The Daily Stoic, anyone facing a difficult stretch at work or in life

The verdict

A fast, encouraging read that makes Stoic resilience feel practical, best for newcomers rather than philosophy veterans.
